Since becoming a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on June 9, 2017, Pakistan has reaped significant benefits across multiple sectors, particularly in trade, security, and regional diplomacy. Pakistan’s involvement in the SCO has strengthened its trade potential, enhanced security cooperation, and bolstered its geopolitical standing within Central Asia.
In terms of trade, Pakistan’s exchange with SCO members, particularly China, has flourished. Bilateral trade with China reached over $27 billion annually, fueled by initiatives such as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Trade with Central Asian countries, including Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, is also on the rise, positioning Pakistan as a crucial transit hub for regional markets.
Pakistan has also benefited from initiatives promoting regional connectivity, energy cooperation, and infrastructure projects. The SCO’s focus on reducing dependency on global currencies has led to the adoption of local currency transactions, further enhancing economic integration.
Despite strained political relations with India, the SCO continues to provide a platform for dialogue and diplomatic engagement. Regional cooperation within the SCO framework has bolstered Pakistan’s role in shaping policies that promote economic stability and security across the region.
Looking ahead, Pakistan’s participation in the SCO presents opportunities for expanded trade, energy collaboration, and regional stability, reinforcing its position as a key player in Central Asian and global affairs.
